How to choose good LED lights

LEDs last because they don't have problems with blown filaments. The LED doesn't stop functioning outright, but it does gradually degrade over time. 


So how can you choose a good LED light?

 

Generally, LED light can be used for more than 50,000 hours, and their luminous intensity will gradually drop from the nominal value to about 70%. Let’s first understand the reasons that affect the life of LED lights.

 

Mainly the following three components: light source, power supply, and housing.

 

1. Light source

 

The quality of the LED chip is an important factor affecting the lifespan, and the design and material of the chip can affect the lifespan of the LED. 


LED packaging technology is also an important factor affecting LED life. A reliable packaging manufacturer has a great relationship with LED life.

 

2. Design of the power supply

 

Because of the strong discreteness of LEDs, the voltage drop, wavelength, light color, and height are very different. Only LEDs with the same indicators above can be used in parallel.


On the contrary, the current of the voltage drop is very large, and the current of the high voltage drop is very small, resulting in uneven light color and height, and shortening the life of the large current.

 

The life of the power supply itself is also an important reason. Generally, electrolytic capacitors have a lifespan of 8,000 hours at 105°C, 15,000 hours at 40-60°C, and 30,000 hours without electrolytic capacitors.

3. Heat dissipation design

 

Heat dissipation is one of the important reasons affecting the life of LEDs. The light-emitting of LEDs needs to be driven by the current. Only about 15% of the electrical energy input to the LEDs is effectively converted into light, and most of them (about 85%) is converted into heat due to ineffectiveness.

 

Among them, the ambient temperature is very important, and the ambient temperature can affect the change of the heat dissipation temperature of the LED lamps by 5~20 degrees.

 

Therefore, when choosing LED lights, you can pay more attention to the following points:


1. Heat dissipation


The accumulation of heat in LED lamps not only affects the electrical performance of the LED but may also eventually lead to LED failure. 


Therefore, in order to ensure the life of the LED lamp, heat dissipation has become a key technology in the application of white LEDs, and reducing or rapidly dissipating the heat generated by LEDs has become the primary issue in the application design of white LEDs.

 

2. Light source material


LEDs are point light sources. If poor LEDs are used, the LEDs will emit a lot of heat during operation, causing the die junction temperature to rise rapidly. The higher the LED power, the greater the heating effect.

 

The increase in LED chip temperature will lead to a change in the performance of the light-emitting device and the attenuation of the electro-optical conversion efficiency and even failure in severe cases.

 

3. Drive power


The quality of the LED power supply directly restricts the reliability of the LED products. 


Therefore, foreign customers in the international market have very high requirements for efficient conversion, effective power, constant current accuracy, power supply life, and electromagnetic compatibility of the LED drive power supply. The role of the lamp is as important as the human heart.

 

4. Drive current


The greater the current flowing through the LED within its current limit parameters, the higher its luminous brightness.

 

That is, the brightness of the LED is proportional to its operating current. However, if the current flowing through the LED exceeds the limit parameter range, the LED will be saturated, which not only greatly reduces the luminous efficiency, but also shortens the service life.

 

5. Light distribution processing


LED is a directional point light source. How to creatively apply this feature of LED to create a comfortable light environment is the core of LED lighting design technology.

 

The LED light source itself generally has a lens or a transmission material, which is used to improve the light output efficiency and meet the light distribution of about 120 degrees of light output, which is generally called a primary optical design.

 

However, in order to meet the various needs of indoor lighting, it is necessary to redistribute the light according to the needs, and how to redistribute the light emitted by the LED to achieve a comfortable light environment is also an important factor affecting the quality of the LED.
